In 8 years my only problem was the battery which out gassed and corroded the terminals as did a lot of the John Deere CUTS. I installed an optima battery which solved the problem. Our "rebrand" JD1050 has been a real peach, No major issues since '87. It's sure enough a rebrand as it looks exactly like it's yanmar equal except for paint and emblems. I'd expected the 990 to be the same as it's a near 100% yanmar. Sounds like the clutch was mis-adjusted right out the gate. The JD790 has the valves mounted on the rockshaft case under the seat. THe 990 rockshaft case is a different configuration. There is a valve on the top under the seat, and another valve on the left side of the case. JD offers a kit for each valve.
