Just changed mine with Castrol Synthetic 10W-40 and a Bosch oil filter. I used Mobil-1 75W-90 synthetic gear lube in the final drive. I did this with 1100 miles on the bike. I did the initial oil change and filter at 56 miles, and another oil change (no filter) at 400 miles; all with Dino oil.

Driveshaft fluid change. I drained the driveshaft gear oil on my 2006 VTX 1300C. Soupy grey and watery,not a lot in there. I used Valvoline Durablend synthetic 80w-90w gear oil in my 97 1100c Shadow Spirit. It's typical for the final drive fluid to be grey/black, as it has molybedenum added to it at assembly.

I use a 2x4 block to level the bike and when filling get it close and then hold upright, level, and finish filling. On the VTX. If you buy a quart and change with every oil change that's 7 - 8 changes if you don't spill any. For me as a 32 year professional mechanic I call it cheap insurance.

I used the bottle the oil came in and slowly added the oil a pump or two at a time after I knew I had over 3 oz in the final.
